problems with the galleries
If you see error messages being displayed in the galleries,
do not panic! Before the server sends the page to your computer,
it checks to make sure that all the photos in the gallery are
present. If it can't find one it replaces the image with some
text instead of displaying an empty gallery. The message which
reads "Image temporarily unavailable" means that the image is
in the process of being updated, or another version of the page
is being written, which can be rectified by reloading the page
after a couple of minutes. Sometimes when we update the site,
the images get queued up and can take about 10 minutes
to become available. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
If the gallery has titles (eg dates for the front garden
photos) but no images, this would indicate that your browser
or firewall software is blocking the images. Consult your software
manuals for how to configure it to allow images to be displayed
on www.copelin.co.uk pages. If you really don't want to do
that then try configuring your software to allow the browser
to display images from /images/ instead.
JavaScript
Although the site uses JavaScript, you should experience no ill-effects of having it disabled.
Currently, only the fly-out menus at the top (for each portal link) rely completely on JavaScript. When
JavaScript is turned off the menus do not appear but you can still use the links at the top to jump between
portals. The contents of the portal you are in are displayed on the left hand side of the page.
This page automatically checks whether you have JavaScript enabled in the next paragraph...
although old browsers might not display the result correctly.
The photo galleries no longer require JavaScript to make
the galleries compatible with all browsers. When the small icons
or thumbnails are clicked, the larger image is opened in
the same window. A link automatically appears to take you back
to the previous page.
browser referrer information
Some of the features on this website need to know what pages
sent you to them, in particular the guestbooks and feedback forms.
They cannot work if your computer and/or browser does not send
that information. To see if your computer is passing referrer
information to the server, you can examine the text that appears
after this paragraph. If you see the address of a web page (it should be
the address of
the page you were viewing before you came to this help page)
then your computer is passing referrer information to the server.
If it is blank, or says something like "(none)" then
your computer does not appear to be passing referrer information
to the web server. If this is the case, you have to enable referrer
logging for this site (www.copelin.co.uk) in both your firewall
(if any, see below) and web browser. Please consult the software's
own help pages for instructions on how to do this.
Sorry, your browser has not sent any referrer information.
Norton Internet Security Issues
If you have this software enabled while browsing the site
you might have to allow the following under "Web Content" in the
Options dialog:
Permit: Scripts (to allow fly-out menus to appear)
Permit: Information about visited sites (to allow guestbook and contact
us information to work)
Ad Blocking: Permit: /images/ (to allow pictures in the gallery to appear)
If you don't want my PlusNet (UK ISP) referral image to appear,
then set Norton to block this image: /images/plusnet_banner_8.gif
Our site does not make use of Cookies, Flash nor Java. At
the time of writing, some of the Programming tutorials and some
of Jonathan's demos will use Java. Unless you want to use them,
having Java disabled makes no difference. Some of our advertisers
use Cookies to track referrals from our web site.
Adverts / Sponsors
As far as adverts on the site goes, the site is purely none-commercial
and paid for out of my own pocket. It is hosted by Surpass
Hosting.
For the time being, I am keeping the site online as a
hobby. If the price of hosting and maintaining it rises then
I may, in the future have some
adverts that when visitors click on them and purchase something
from that company then I receive a small percentage of what you
spend. This is common practise on the internet.
