Ibiza 2003

Day 5

Near to Cala d'Albarca is a very nice set of rock formations that I think can only be appreciated from the sea. Divers will find it interesting to as it is also the site of a cave dive (see pictures in Dive Photos section).

Cala Salada is pretty impressive with its large cliffs and the divers can explore the vertical-walls that continue down for a very long way underwater. Considering that it had not rained properly in Ibiza for at least a couple of months, the whole island was amazingly green, even the areas exposed to salt water. I came here expecting a "concrete jungle", but in fact it was just as beautiful as Menorca.

After four and a half days of watching the divers have lots of fun, Mark and Sam thought it was about time we experienced our first dive! The place they chose to take us was Port des Torrent because it is relatively shallow. It was my turn to go first! I managed to breath through the apparatus out of the water okay, but under water was a different matter! It started off okay but as I went further underwater (... a few centimetres... ) my inability to see without my glasses disoriented me a little. My brain was constantly telling me to hold my breath, so I had to surface and catch my breath back! That was when I felt I did not want to continue, but was extremely pleased that I at least gave it a go!

Ian on the other hand looked like he had done it before... which makes me wonder if he had secretly gone down to the local leisure centre before we went on holiday. He swam for a couple of metres to get used to the apparatus and after a short talk from Mark, we didn't see them again for about 15 minutes! They dived around the sea-bed underneath where the boat was anchored to a depth of 9 metres. During the dive Ian saw a lionfish and an octopus; two creatures that are not normally seen on a first-dive! After the dive Ian was clearly thrilled by his experience because he told me that he was going to get me a pair of goggles made up with my lens-prescription so that I could see what he did! (Note to Ian: I am still waiting for them).

What better way to end the day than to watch a beautiful sunset? We had lovely sunsets like this just about every night.
